Japan Leaders
This is Soichi Yokoi. Sgt. Soichi Yokoi was the last Japanese straggler on Guam. He lived for 28 years after World War II ended. Yokoi lived in a tunnel-like underground cave supported by bamboo. We was with 2 other Japanese soldiers until they died from food poisoning. The food was most likely to be the poisonous Cane Toad that lives on Guam today. He was found on January 24th 1972 after being seen along the Talofofo river by hunters. He survived by eating coconuts, breadfruit, papaya, fish, shrimp, eels, and rats. After he returned to Japan Sgt. Soichi Yokoi bowed before the emperor and was willing to take his life for surrendering to the Americans. All Japanese soldiers were willing to die than dishonor their country. Yokoi died on September 22, 1997 from a heart failure.
