Once the Japanese ruled Guam they changed the name Guam into "Omiya Jima". Hagatna was changed to "Akashi" and Asan was changed to "Asama Mura". Agat was changed to "Showa Mura". The Japanese also changed customs and languages. The Japanese strictly enforced the bowing movement that meant a sign of respect. In 1942 schools were reopened and children had to bow to the Emperor before classes started in the morning. The Japanese forced a lot of Chamorros inland and banished them from towns and villages. The Japanese showed no mercy to the Chamorro People. They killed Chamorros to make the other people scared so they won't attack back. Many Japanese put Chamorros to labor. They killed all the big and strong Chamorros so they can't kill the Japanese or help the Americans fight and liberate Guam.
